FDA approves "New gene therapy to treat childhood leukemia"

FDA recently approved CAR T cell therapy, a new live cell therapy to kill acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)cells in children. One of the cell types in our blood called T cells recognize disease causing germs and cells infected by germs. These T cells kills germs and infected cells. CAR T cell therapy is a personized cancer treatment. In this therapy, T cells isolated from a cancer patients’ blood are genetically engineered to recognize and kill leukemia cells and are injected back into the patients’ blood. The genetically modified T cells in the blood will target leukemic cells and kill them. This is the first gene therapy approved by FDA in the united states and showed promising results in clinical trial.

New drug to treat "Acute Myeloid Leukemia"

Two new drugs are approved for high risk acute myeloid leukemia (AML), an aggressive form of blood cancer. The first one is Enasidenib, a drug that targets mutated IDH 2, an enzyme involved in glucose metabolism and energy production in cells. The second is a combination of drugs daunorubicin and cytarabine encapsulated in tiny fat droplets called liposomes.
